About diabetes and obesity
  • With at least 171 million reported cases of diabetes worldwide – a figure set to more than double by 2030 (World Health Organization, WHO), consumption of some 10% of Western healthcare budgets, and around 3.2 million deaths per year resulting from related complications, diabetes represents one of the world's major healthcare problems.
  • In the last 20 years there has also been a marked increase in obesity rates and the WHO currently estimates more than 1 billion overweight adults globally, at least a third of which are clinically obese. The continuing rise of obesity poses a major risk of related chronic conditions including cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Commercial opportunity
  • The above figures and trends clearly demonstrate a very significant and growing market, and the epidemic rise in “diabesity” clearly highlights the urgent need for novel therapeutic and diagnostic solutions to tackle these chronic conditions.
  • These trends are driving significant investment by the bio-pharmaceutical industry to develop/acquire novel anti-diabetic and anti-obesity drugs. Global retail sales of diabetes-related drugs, currently at some US$15 billion, are projected to grow annually by 12% through 2011; double the anticipated industry average sales growth ( Bernstein Research Report) .
  • Diabetica is committed to generation of innovative therapeutic and diagnostic strategies and solutions for diabetes, obesity and the metabolic syndrome.
